Snowflakes, Fish, Hearts and Clunies

Christine is the lucky winner of Sherry's ceramic shuttle and she plans to pay it forward with a hand made purse giveaway.
Angie has the sole of the baby bootie done now but she thinks it might be a bit big. Her next entrant for the challenge is the patchwork pattern from Mary Konior Tatting with Visual Patterns done in size 10 Cebelia thread and she has enough thread to make a lot more. Her third entry is from the Priscilla Tatting Book No. 1. Changes could be made to make it more tatter friendly since each round is cut and tied.
Vinnie's latest endeavor is clunies. Her first one was turned into a basked of flowers bookmark. Consistency is tough, but perseverance pays off. Add encapsulation and here is a bracelet with multiple coloured flowers on a cluny vine. Very interesting.
Ancolie has been learning split chains and found several tutorials online. She made this little doily while watching TV and remarks that it uses only one split ring.
Wanda has added this interesting collection of mounted shuttles and snowflakes to her wall art. It's an interesting was to display your tatting and tools and I can see more examples of them popping up in tatdom. Maybe it's time to take down the wallpaper and paint the walls a nice soft ivory so that I can cover my walls with lace. Oh honey, what are you doing this weekend?......
Kathy's 9th motif is a snowflake with a variation from DMC Festive Tatting designed by Marion T. Leyds. She omitted the central rings to avoid having to use 2 shuttles. These snowflakes will look good on her favourite winter sweater and Kathy likes to dress the snowflakes up with jewels and silk flowers. Another Marion T. Leyds design from the same book also missing the inner rings is Motif #10. This time the missing rings make room to hang a snowflake ‘crystal’ pendant that's a real sun catcher. Motif 11 is her own design and the inspiration for this snowflake was a Lenox porcelain snowflake that she saw in a catalog.
Sherry drew the winner for her beautiful ceramic shuttle yesterdayand the winner was another challenge participant, Christine. Today she is starting the challenge all over again. This time she will be using her hand dyed thread (HDT) and in addition to doing the challenge she'll also have samples of her HDT for the shop. Her first piece is a fish she designed for friend and student Kyoung-mi worked in size 20 "BUTTER TOFFEE" HDT.
Wally made Ann-Christine Sundqvist's button pattern called Abby's Heart when she didn't have internet access. The thread is El Beida cotton perle in ecru and the brick red thread is DMC floss. The small heart is Rosemarie Peel's "Heart of England" in the same threads. It seems a bit out of shape and she thinks she might have made a mistake so she's going to tat it again.

Snowflakes, Bookmarks and Experimental Tatting

Vicki has just begun needle tatting and she has decided to join the challenge. Here is the second round of the Clover Doily she is working on.
Christine has also joined the challenge and she did “Black Magic” from Mary Konior's “Tatting with Visual Patterns” in DMC Pearl Cotton size 12 - Ecru. It is going to be attached to a crazy quilt block that she is doing as part of a round robin.
Kyoung-mi is one of Sherry's Korean students and she joins the challenge with some colourful tatted leaves.

Vinnie has been learning new things and then experimenting with them. She started with folded rings and then daisy picots, followed by the balanced double stitch see how things progressed step by step? What clever ideas!
Ancolie shows us her celtic bookmark. They are usually done in different colours but the monochromatic version really brings out the texture. I think I'd like it mounted on a hair clip. Here is her diamond finally finished.
Ais was in India again and she managed to do a couple of motifs but no pictures except this one another bookmark like the previous entries.
Jeff made made Jon's Quantiesque Snowflake again this time in size 80 shown next to a quarter then shown next to the first snowflake they're both tiny.
Sherry has jumped back into the challenge and plans to do all of her new entries in HDT. Speaking of HDT she has some mouthwatering colour available like "BELL PEPPERS", "GERBER DAISIES" and "WITCHES BREW". Don't forget that the 15th is the draw for one of Sherry's lovely ceramic tatting shuttles.

Snowflakes, Bags, Butterflies, and Elephant

Kelly tatted Jon's Quantiesque snowflake in red and green and likes how the colours go together. The doily is one of her favorite patterns by Heather Johnston called St. Pat's and the HDT which was purchased from Karey at the Fridge Elements Tatting weekend workshop. Jill tatted the snowflake pattern from Myra Piper's book "Tatting" again this time in size 80 thread color code 55 and she used Gina's idea to make it into a bookmark. The cross is from "Tatting Patterns" by Mary Konior done in DMC Perle size 12, color code 316. Steph has tatted Inga Madsen's Elephant, possibly one of the world's smallest. He's only 2-1/4" high, 2-3/4" wide. Vinnie tatted Teri Dusenbury's butterfly in peach and cream using #20 Anchor Mercer crochet thread with some modifications.She used the ball thread instead of two shuttles for the wings and the ring at the wing points is made using the ball thread. Yesterday she came across Martha Ess's page and had to try out the folded ring daisy. She loves how it turned out and has plans for making something with it. Wanda has tried tatting as art. She photographed a doily and some special shuttles on a wooden background and has framed the picture to hang on her wall. I like this idea because both the shuttles and the doily are still usable.
Heather tatted up Marilee's easy victorian rectangle book mark, one for each of her kids. She has been learning some new techniques and now she can do both split rings and split chains with the shuttle. Some new batches of HDT are ready, check her shop for Aqua Jade, Blueberry Caramel, Blueberry Yogurt, Bright Coral, Curried Pink, Golden Peach, Grape Lime, Mulberry Dreams and Spiced Caramel.
TattingChic has laid aside all of her numerous WIPs to work an a new project that she thinks will be more fun.
Ellen had a tatting meltdown after making more than 50 Christmas trees. She hasn't done anything for the NewYears bag exchange but she did find these pieces that she had done except for the lining. It's too bad that they are too small to fit the exchange criteria. This first one is Dianna Steven's pattern. She can't remember where she got the rose purse pattern. The last 2 are patterns from Japanese books.
Diane has been making Mary Konior's Leaf Braid to empty her shuttles and counting it as Motif 4. Now that you have all these pieces what are you going to do with them?
Maria has been tatting without blogging for a while and here are her new pieces.
One of Moni's new year resolutions is to attach the edgings tatted for the first 25 challenge onto the things they were made for.

Hearts, Fragments and Polygons

Angie tried Mary's Lacey Heart and made a mistake that she didn't catch until 2 rings later and she hates undoing rings, then Ruth's Easy Heart where she put the centre ring in backwards and again didn't catch it until 2 rings later. She started again and the center ring is going the right way but it doesn't lay flat so she ripped out the last ring and is going to add split rings a make it into a necklace for her granddaughter.
Ancolie has tatted a four-sided polygon, not a diamond, in 2 colours DMC black and white size 80. This next piece is a diamond seen under a magnifying glass with shuttles for perspective. That's itty bitty thread being used.
Bev tatted a heart from Patti Duff's Mini Tats size 50 DMC and added Victorian sets at the bottom to make a bookmark. The Celtic Badge by Rosemarie Peel is being made in the MacKay plaid and the prototype is in size 20 but the finished piece will be in size 80 thread and will be put in a lovely brooch. Bev is proud to announce that she has finally mastered the SCMR used here at the bottom of Martha Ess' "Teensy Forsythia Heart" tatted in vintage Clarke's Big Ball soft green, and yellow; size 30. Bev is making a 2-part scene on cream ultra suede for her pastor using a vintage woodcut on one side and the goblet, wafer and cross on the other side. She may re-tat the goblet(Sharon Briggs) in a smaller thread with a better color for the wine for proportional size compared to the cross(Lindsay Rogers). She was trying to approximate a Shepard's loaf in block tatting (Martha Ess). The white thread is DMC 30, the wine is DMC Cebelia 30; and the block tatted bread in ecru is vintage Coats Best six-cord 20.



Diane tatted Mary Konior's Flower Fragment from Tatting with Visual Patterns using Finca #16, color #7644. She started on Leaf Braid from the same book using a favourite thread Altin Basak size 50, color #3004 and her new gourd shuttle. As you can see it's a very large shuttle which is great for working on large projects because of all the thread it will hold.
