Dimples, Tabatha and a Variegated Motif

Wally has had some interesting adventures but she has arrived safely in Egypt and today she has posted another motif. This is a pattern that has dimpled chains.

Laura has done another of Kersti Anear's Tabatha bookmarks. This one is in a wine colour DMC #6 Perle colour #814.

Bhavani joins the challenge today from Trichy, India.She is interested in a number of needle arts which you can explore in her other blogs. She explains that she usually uses Anchor Pearl cotton but for the challenge she used a silk thread that comes on a spool like sewing thread. Just as she was finishing up the first motif, the thread broke so she started another motif. The second motif was completed without incident. The thread looks yummy, I wonder if we can get it in North America?

Heart and candy

Some of our participants are involved in exchanges and other gift giving which means that they are doing a lot of tatting but they can't share the pictures. Consequently there are pictures of previously created projects showing up that don't really have anything to do with the challenge. Some of them like Carol's passion flower are unique enough that I can't resist including them, but if you have posted a non-challenge item and it didn't show up here, that was the reason. Likewise, when the challenge first started and there were only 1 or 2 people posting each day I included a brief synopsis of what they had written even when it wasn't tatting related. These days there are too many non-tatting related postings and I have too little time to always continue that practice, so I will only be including as much as I have time for.

Janet has posted the pattern for the snowflake she did for the exchange, but won't post the picture until her partner has received it.

LaRae has posted a heart motif, the pattern for which she got off the internet. The web site it was on is no longer there.

Martha has posted a picture of calorie free candy corn, tatted with 3 strands of embroidery floss.

Cross, edging, and some things too secret to post

Ruth has found the cord to her printer and finally sent off all the copies of her new book. Just in time too, because she's got a new addition to the family. Pictures will be coming soon.

Janet has been working on exchange items. No pictures yet though.

Gail has done another Mary Konior cross, it's called Rockingham and it's from the Tatting in Lace book in DMC size 12.






Jon is working on an edging for a scarf her mother gave her in a variegated DMC Dentelles. She asks what name do you give to a finished piece of tatting?


In response to the discussion on the tatting lists, Terry has posted a doily she did a while ago,done in pink, green and ecru Altin Basak thread.

Edgings, Icicles and Flowers

Sorry for the sporadic posting. Things have been a little hectic here.

Sharon has posted a motif turned into a doily as part of the design primer.

Snowy has posted a lovely edging attached to a hanky and a second hanky with a motif in one corner, both are very pretty. She has also finished her black edging and discovered that she omitted a ring at one point. Now to fix it. We've all done that, working on something and then noticing later that there's a mistake further back. Then you have to decide whether to leave it, cut it off, or try to fix it. I had a hanky edging once where fixing it meant hiding 8 ends inside 2 rings because the thread kept breaking. What a stinker. I hate fixing things like this, you have 2 short ends on the left, 2 short ends on the right, and the 2 ends where you add the new thread in. A minimum of 6 ends to hide. Hands up, all those who love to hide ends especially short ones. What? No hands?

Since Carol has been working on some exchange pieces that she can't show yet, she has posted a passion flower she did a while ago. Isn't it marvelous?

Laura's been making some more adjustments on the edging for Candace's wedding hanky. Lots of possibilities.

Larae has done another icicle from the same Workbasket magazine. This tree is going to be so pretty.

More tatting

Wally is headed for Egypt and won't be able to post for a while. Have a safe trip Wally and hopefully you'll soon be connected back to the internet.

Werner has asked to be removed from the 25 Motif Challenge for now.

Mark is back from the Circle City Lacemakers Fall Retreat and it sounds like he had a wonderful time.

Sharon is continuing on with the design primer.

Laura has tatted Lynda's "Angel at Heart" edging. She wants to use it as a hanky edging but will do it in a finer thread than the Cebelia she used for this one. She's also completed Kersti Anear's Sweet Heart bookmark in Altin Basik.

Marvelous Motives

Eva has posted a picture of the angel she created and a link to her pattern for it.






Gail has done a cross designed by Lindsay Rogers, it is in the 25 Years of the Ring of Tatters book.









Jon has created a wonderful mignonette doily. It seems to ruffle a bit around the edge, but blocking might take care of that.










Maria has jumped into a whirlwind of beaded tatting with all kinds of different beaded motives.








Snowy has tatted some more snowflakes. One is from 25 Years Of Tatting and the other from Vida Sunderland's book. She has also done some work on an edging for her daughter.

Fund raisers, lace days, and babies

Lynda has been tatting a lot of crosses and earrings for a church fund raiser so she hasn't had a lot of time to work on her Chrismons. Shall we tell her that the 15 crosses she did could count toward her 25? Or do we make her keep on tatting. I vote for making her keep on tatting.


Mark is one of the teachers at the Circle City Lacemakers Fall Lace Retreat. He will be teaching the tatting class zigzag chain and SR ground making a flower spray motif inspired by Bruegge Bloemwerk. This is the same project he taught at the Hector Tat Day. Hopefully he'll post some pictures when the weekend fun is all over.


Jeanne has been a busy tatter. She has tatted an angel to go on the Fort Wayne Tatter's Guild wreath for the Botanical Gardens Christmas Wreath display / sale. They are doing 2 wreaths this year one will be tatted snowflakes and the other will be angels. She's also done a swan, another of Martha Ess' block tatting critters. In addition to these she has been doing some special tatting for a newcomer, expected in April. Grandma has tatted a lovely bookmark in pastel Flora 20 using Bina Madden's pattern and 6 wee angels so that Mom, Dad and the grandparents have something to treasure and remind them of the little one. What a delightful idea!

Hiding ends techniques and an original edging

Marilee has done the "Deshka Dancer Snowflake" designed by Georgia Seitz from her book, "Tatting Alaskan Style" and she shows how to hide all the separate ends as the motif is worked rather than hiding them all after the motif is done.


Laura is designing a hanky edging for her daughter's wedding and she wants it to be her own original design. I don't recall seeing another one like this, how about anyone else?

Gifts of Tatting

Clyde has completed Rebecca's cross in teal and dark purple. It is fortunate that he likes working this pattern as he's received a request for more. We love showing off our lace, but we often end up giving it away as a result.





Kathy took one of Patti Duff's Mini Tats as her inspiration to create a delightful Christmas ornament and she's sharing the pattern with us. Kathy's sending these out with her Christmas cards and they're not being worked with threads from her exchange partners, but she may include them as part of her challenge anyway.




LaRae has completed an icicle that she thinks is a Workbasket pattern from 1990. Another motif for the Christmas tree display.

No new pictures today

Gail has taken a break from tatting to create her first knitting pattern for sale. Congratulations Gail.

Laura shows us her coffee table with tatting under glass. An interesting way to both show off and protect her lace. A great conversation piece too!

Halloween Tatting

In time for Halloween, Carol has posted a Charming Witch, or is that a witch with charm?




Martha has done a Maltese ring bookmark with a multicoloured chain. Pretty, but I can understand why she says it was a pain in the neck to do. In addition, she's all ready for Trick or Treaters with this very skinny fellow on her blog.

Let it snow, Let it snow

Janet gets ready for Christmas with Jingly Bell earrings.


Riet has created some lovely snowflakes in metallic thread. She doesn't think it's DMC but maybe someone else who was at Palmettos last year can help her out.

Marilee has done one of Vida Sunderman's snowflakes called Ruffle-Edged Snowflake in size 40 DMC Cordonnet Special.

Laura did Mark Myer's Hyacinth Flower in Altin Basak size 50 for the bloom and DMC Cebelia size 20 for the stem and leaf.

LaRae posts a motif from "Heritage Patterns" by Norma Benporath.

Candy, Booties and Doilies

Just another reminder for people just starting the challenge. You don't need to send a message to the e-mail lists or e-mail me directly when you have a new motif on your blog. I check the blogs daily for new entries. The only way I can get you pictures to show up here is to copy them onto my computer, so by signing up you're giving me permission to show off your tatting. Some of you don't have the software to crop your pictures and you end up with lots of background that takes up room. That limits how many pictures I can include in the daily post so I will crop out excess background where necessary.

Don't forget to check out the other blogs and leave comments. People like to know that you are looking at their work and admiring it. If you like a new design someone has done, don't forget to mention it. People appreciate your comments and they like to know you admire their designs.



Candy anyone? Janet has tatted a peppermint twist. What's with this tatting food lately. Yesterday it was strawberries and today it's peppermint candy.


If you were wondering why there hasn't been anything new on Donata's blog for a while, it's because she has been working on baby booties. She started with the little heart motif done back to back with a row of ring and chain around the outside. Not quite right, it's too small. So she did it again separating the hearts with a pair of daisies. Much closer, but it may need to be made wider at the toe. I don't know, it may be all right the way it is. It sure is different, lacy and delicate. I can't wait to see the rest of the bootie. My first bootie attempt came out looking like an oddly shaped little pouch.

EeKoon has now posted the pictures that she couldn't upload yesterday. A familiar wee design from Mini Tats and the beginnings of the doily from Be-Stitched done in a shade of watermelon Floretta size 10. What's with all the food colours and tatted food. You guys are making me hungry.

Scary spiders and yummy strawberries

Eva has some new pauashell shuttles from New Zealand. She's only keeping 2 of them. Tell us how they tat Eva.


Janet shares the pattern for her daisy picot snowflake created the other day.


Clyde has completed another large motif for his tablecloth. These are large 4 row motives and there's a lot of work in each one. If each motif was posted as it was done as a separate motif, you could visit Clyde's blog regularly and think that nothing new has been posted, but when you see them all together it looks spectacular. Continually tatting the same motif is difficult because it is so easy to become bored with it. Part of the challenge of such a large undertaking is just the discipline to keep at it. Clyde is wisely breaking up the monotony by tatting other things in between.


Jon has been trying to work a new design that uses the onion ring join, but so far it isn't working as planned. In the interim she's sharing a previously designed project, a large star worked all in one round. Very interesting.


EeKoon has completed 2 more motives but she has been unable to post them.

Laura has faced her fear of spiders and tatted Mark's spider and web.


Martha joins the challenge with 3 motives. The first is Donna's accidental cross. She's used size 30 Omega thread for this design. The second is Rita Cochrane's Thistle Do Pin from the Online class and the texture made her think of strawberries. What she created makes me hungry.

Pumpkins and Snowflakes, It must be Fall.

Wally has posted a fan motif which incorporates pearl tatting. Wally has cleverly used this technique to create an effect similar to hairpin lace.


Eva has done Kersti Anear's bookmark design using Flora thread in her team's colours.






Janet has done Donata's sweet heart motif. She has also created an intriguing red and white daisy picot snowflake with a button centre.




Gail was looking through her stash and found a previously created pumpkin and jack o'lantern. She's also done her first try at a goddess shape using a Scharf leaf for the bottom. It still needs a bit of tweaking.


Sharon is continuing on with the designing primer.



Snowy has posted a motif done in a scrumptious Valdani thread. She didn't identify the pattern but it looks like the same one Nivedita has on her blog from the Blomqvist and Persson book.


Carol has a tatted moonlighting bat on her blog and a GIANT spider, but it's not tatted. Carol must be trying to terrify the neighborhood kids.


LaRae has another snowflake done. She used the pattern from DMC Festive Tatting but the design called for 8 repeats and it worked better for her using only 7.

Earrings, Snowflakes and Bookmarks

Janet has been laid up with a sprained ankle and that makes for lots of time to tat. She's been doing lots of experimenting with theTurkish filament threads and beads. Star shaped earrings, silvery loops and sparkly bats. The tatting is terrific but the camera's a little out of focus.



Snowy has finally received the books she ordered 3 weeks ago and she has completed a simple snowflake and another motif in red. The red motif looks adorable although she says she's fed up with it.




Laura has posted another bookmark. This one is Tabatha, a design by Kersti Anear, worked in DMC perle size 5 in a lovely shade of purple.



LaRae shares with us a motif done in 2002 for the Dodge House Christmas tree. The colours that year were blue, white and silver, simple, yet pretty.

Compare old vs new and plain vs variegated

Meme has posted a design that uses block tatting. It's a pretty motif from the Burda magazine.






Laura is showing us some tatting done when she had just begun to tat. It just shows how much we can improve. Also posted today is a bookmark designed by Kim Miller that includes crochet as well as tatting.


LaRae has done Mary Konior's Windmills pattern in plain white with much smaller picots. The design is more easily visible than it is in the samples done by Donna in the variegated thread and normal size picots.

A Thistle and a Celtic Motif

Riet has done a thistle motif from the on line class. It may be a weed to some, but to others it's a wildflower and as Riet points out, the birds like the wildflowers in her garden.













Marilee has done a celtic motif that she will be adding to a handwoven jacket. Very intricate and very dramatic in black.
