Motifs, Ice Drops, Edgings, Doilies, Crosses, Butterflies and Snowflakes

The Guidelines

As we begin a new year, I like to remind people about the guidelines for this challenge. I know it's boring stuff, but it helps to keep us all on track so I try to post them at the beginning of each month so that newcomers know what to do and how to get their tatting posted. Whenever you post your tatting, other people like to know where the pattern came from (or if it's your own), what threads your used, how big the finished project was and your thoughts on how easy or hard it was and and special comments you might like to add. The challenge runs for 12 consecutive months, any 12 months, it DOESN"T run form January to January, so you don't have to start now, you can start any time you feel like it.  If you go months without any new tatting content in your blog, I'll delete you from the links list on the right just because I don't have the time to keep visiting a blog where nothing changes. Likewise if you have a little hiccup with your server or your computer and I keep hitting broken links I'll delete you from the list. If you notice that your name has been dropped and you're still actively participating, send me an email and I'll add you back on. I'm not being mean,  I do try to keep up if I can, but if I can't, I can't. In general the guidelines for the challenge are as follows:

1. Permission to copy. When a participant joins they are authorizing me to copy their pictures to be shown on the challenge blog.
2. The blogs are ALL checked whenever there is an update using the links list in the sidebar on the right, there is no need to advise me that you have added new content. If your new items haven't shown up, it's because I haven't had time to do an update yet, or you changed your blog address and didn't tell me.
3. I can't keep track of how many motifs each person does. You may post articles of tatting that you don't plan on including in your 25, or you may post a pair of earrings and count each earring as a separate motif. I don't read minds, so it's up to each participant to tell me when they have reached their goal of 25.
4. From past experience I know the challenge is addictive. If you finish and plan on doing it again let me know so that I continue to check your blog on a regular basis. Also let me know if once was enough so that I can move your blog to the list of past participants.
5. Whenever you get a chance don't just view the pictures here, take the time to click on the links to people's blogs and read all about what they are doing, instead of just getting the snippets of it here. People like it when you take the time to visit their blog and comment on their work. A lot of the fun of the challenge is that we get to know each other and encourage one another to try new things.
6. Tatting 25 motifs in a year typically means tatting 2 motifs per month. Tatters who do not post any tatting content for 5 or 6 months will be removed from the list of participants because I just don't have the time to check a blog where nothing changes.
---------------

Surya does most of her crafting with her kids and she has decided this year to join the challenge tatting vintage motifs and using Adobe Illustrator to diagram them completing 25 motifs and gaining better drawing skills. Her first entry is Medallion No. 128 from Corticelli Lessons in Tatting, with one little tatting blip.

Diane tatted an Ice Drop in green on New Year's day. Then she picked up Heritage Patterns by Norma Benporath and started in on Edging 1, but she misread the pattern and omitted the daisy center for the five ring motif. She kept tatting made the next daisy centre and then realized that she wasn't supposed to RW. Snip. Again. She rewound her shuttles and started again, but there is something not quite right here so she's set it aside for another day. It's nice that the Ice Drops are still flowing off the shuttles in green thread and coloured stones. Her friend Denise sent her a picture of her latest Ice Drop, adapted from Vida Sunderman's Tatted Snowflakes.  Her next effort from Heritage Patterns is Edging 2 done in size 20 thread, and she loves the pattern, but the rings are too large for her liking in size 20. She spent time with Patti Duff's Minitats, looking for patterns that would work with Ice Drops. This is an adaptation of #5 and she's starting to grow fond of pink. This next one is an adaptation of #7 from Minitats. The blue gem in this one is a little smaller, so when she used an adaptation of #11 from Minitats she reduced the number of rings to 5 and on the other side also reduced the size of the small rings. In her quest for Ice Drops in colour she used size 20 Flora #62. Then size 20 Lizbeth #112, Carousel. Followed by size 20 Lizbeth #124, Spring Garden. She worked some more with Heritage Patterns by Norma Benporath, this one is Edging 3, a two shuttle pattern. An Ice Drop based on #32 in Patti Duff's Minitats and the back is just as pretty as the front. Another one in hot pink. Then a repeat with sequins. Another one with sequins, this time using Jelly Bean thread. Norma Benporath Edging, #4 rounded out her tatting day.

Lilas posted a lovely sample of tatting using a pattern by My-Ha Kyoung done in size 80 thread.

Marie tatted this little cross from Rebeca Jones, "The Complete Book of Tatting," figure #201. The "Double O Cross," is by Dee Powell. An easy cross by Lene Bjorn is called "Christina".

Muskaan posted the Craftree butterfly with diagram and pattern. She finished off 2016 tatting the Eighth Day of December Snowflake and the Twentieth Day of December Snowflake by Lene Björn, although she tatted this one like a poinsettia with yellow beads in the centre, variegated red surrounding them and green points for leaves.

Sue has almost finished Renulek's Spring Doily 2016 in size 80 Lizbeth Snow White and Summer Fun. She didn't get her 25 done for 2016, but since one of her projects has been this enormous doily she still deserves credit for lots of tatting accomplished. The Heidi Cross from Tatted Bookmarks-cross-shaped by Lene Bjorn is tatted in size 40 Lizbeth Scottish Thistle and she found the Josephine Knots a little challenging.
